Widgets don’t garner the huge draw that they once did. One day years ago widgets used to be an essential feature that set Android apart from its competition, but the competition have since gotten wise and have added widgets as well. That said, a lot of people still use widgets, and they can be an important part of any phone home screen set up.

This free widget app offers a minimalistic clock widget resembling Google Now cards. The Clock Now app is in the old Google Now cards style, but not to worry ­– there are still numerous people who enjoy this type of theme. Clock Now offers you a few widget styles and both dark and light color schemes. After all, sometimes simple is truly better.

Like

  • It includes both a clock widget and a toggles widget.
  • Neutral themes and transparency allow this app to work with almost any theme.
  • It is in the style of Holo theming and Google Now cards so it will fit right in on Nexus devices.
  • Best of all, it is free!

Dislike

  • It is a fairly simple app so there are fewer options for customization.
  • If you are looking for something that offers more than a clock or a toggle, then you will want to look for a different app.
  • The developer of Clock Now is no longer supporting this app, which means that in due course it is going to become incompatible with almost all devices and thus useless.

Clock Now isn’t as complex as many of the other apps, but sometimes you really want simple because you do not need complex. A real bonus is that the Clock Now app is free!

DashClock Widget offers more than the majority of widgets and, as an added bonus, it’s free.

  • DashClock widget is free and provides you with great functionality for a basic free app.
  • No in-app purchases required.
  • DashClock has tons of plugins that nicely extend the app’s functionality. This includes flashlight support.
  • Stock functionality includes Gmail, the weather, clock, calendar support, and the next alarm.
  • It will work on both the lock screen and home screen.

Dislike

  • If you are looking for the latest and greatest flashy widget, you might find that this app is too minimalistic for your needs.
  • You will stumble across some bugs.

Don’t let DashClock Widget’s minimalistic look fool you because it is packed with all kinds of functions on both your home screen and your lock screen.

Chronus Home and Lock Widget

Chronus Home and Lock Widget has a price tag of US $1.99 and is certainly worth it because this is much more than just a clock.

Like

  • Chronus Home and Lock Widget is a very competent clock and weather widget with a minimalistic flavor.
  • It offers extra functionality such as calendar, RSS reading, support, missed calls, built-in Gmail, and text messages. However, you may need to download an extension for the app.
  • DashClock support excluding Lollipop. It also offers support for Android Wear.
  • DashClock also works on the lock screen.

Dislike

  • While not the fault of the developer, there is no DashClock support for Android 5.x.

Chronus is an inexpensive, well-rounded widget with plenty of features that is able to perform many different functions.

DigiCal + Calendar 7 Widgets

While costing slightly more at US $4.95, this is an excellent calendar widget, and you will be hard pressed to find another widget app that has the volume of information that DigiCal + Calendar 7 Widgets has to offer.

The app does a great job of keeping your tasks under control. Thus, it’s not really a surprise that it rates at 4.5 stars in the Google Play store.  While the widgets lack the ability to be customized, they do come with neutral colors so most of the time it will blend nicely with your theme. The calendar app is solid and reliable.

Like

  • It offers six different calendar views along with six widgets that work on the lock screen.
  • DigiCal + Calendar 7 Widgets offers neutral colors and transparency to aid this app in working with most themes.
  • There are some minimal customization options that will help you tweak the widgets to fit your taste.
  • There are light and dark themes available.

Dislike

  • The $4.95 is a bit steep for a calendar app, however, we do think it’s worth it.
  • If you liked the weather addition to the DigiCal calendar, you are going to have to pay for the subscription in order to keep using it.
  • A few graphical and performance glitches on certain (older) devices.

If you like the app, you can try out the free version before you buy it, but if you are looking for a solid calendar widget, you won’t find anything much better than what DigiCal offers.

The price of these flashlight apps can vary greatly as there are many to choose from. The flashlight app is one of the best reasons you have for owning an Android device that has a camera flash.

Like

  • Almost all of the flashlight apps are accessible from the home screen for a quick use.
  • There are a number of flashlight apps that need only the bare minimum of permissions to be used.
  • The majority of flashlight apps are free.
  • They also generally work on most phones (that have a flash).
  • Screen light options for those without a camera flash.

Dislike

  • Some of the flashlight apps do not have widgets.
  • Using your smartphone as a flashlight isn’t good for your smartphone’s flash module.
